Greener Cars Drive Up Savings

Private and fleet buyers in the UK are to be offered up to £5,000 as an incentive to buy greener cars in a government scheme launching at the start of next year. 

From January 2011, customers will be able to claim up to £5,000 to reduce the upfront costs of ultra-low carbon cars by as much as 25 per cent.

The scheme is designed to encourage more people to choose an ultra-low carbon vehicle, reducing pollution and stimulating the automotive sector.

The incentive has been confirmed ahead of the completion of the government's spending review in October, to give more certainty to investors and manufacturers of ultra-low carbon cars who need to make long-term decisions on where to launch the vehicles and production facilities.

£43 million has been made available for the scheme up to the end of March 2012.
